Fire, motion, and a horse with absolutely no intention of behaving.
Pyreborne is the original 16×20 acrylic painting by Nadine Ewing — the one-of-one artwork from which all prints and collector editions are created.
There is only one original.
This piece came from a very different place than some of my quieter work.
Pyreborne is heat, motion, attitude, and barely contained energy.
The horse rises out of layers of black, gold, yellow, and ember-orange, with the mane sweeping through the background as if the whole piece is moving. I wanted the horse to feel less like something posed and more like something elemental — alive, alert, powerful, and impossible to ignore.
The surface is heavily worked, with layered acrylic, visible texture, expressive marks, and areas where the paint builds and catches the light differently depending on where you stand.
That physical surface is something a reproduction can suggest, but never completely recreate.
And that is what makes the original different.
You can own the image as a print.
You can own a signed collector edition.
But there is only one canvas where the actual marks, texture, decisions, corrections, and layers happened.
This is it.
A little about the piece
I learn something from every original I paint.
Sometimes it is technique. Sometimes composition. Sometimes color. Sometimes it is simply learning when to stop trying to control everything and let the painting become what it wants to become.
Pyreborne taught me to trust intensity.
To let the contrast stay strong.
To let the texture be messy.
To let the color be loud.
And to stop worrying about whether a piece was behaving politely.
It wasn’t supposed to.
That is part of why I like this one.
It has presence.
Why this original is priced at $7,500
Originals are difficult for me to price because they are not inventory in the usual sense.
By the time I finish one, I have spent hours looking at it, changing it, solving problems, learning from it, and living with it.
Every original becomes part artwork and part record of where I was as an artist when I made it.
That said, Pyreborne is a piece I am genuinely willing to let go to the right collector.
The price reflects its one-of-one nature, the hours and physical work that went into creating it, and the fact that once the original leaves my studio, there will never be another one.
Unlike some paintings I am almost embarrassingly attached to, this one feels ready to go live somewhere else.
Preferably somewhere dramatic.
It would be rude to put this horse in a boring room.
